In the fall of 2014, I did something many can relate to: I left a highly stressful job before I went completely bonkers. I was visiting with my mother one day while she was babysitting my nephew. I was switching off between doing weird voices for my nephew’s toy dinosaurs and lamenting about how rough the job search was going when she said, “It’s too bad you can’t get a job doing something like that,” referring to my weird character voices. The rest of the convo went like this: “You’ve always been creative.” “True.” “You’ve always made up the funniest characters, voices, and backstories for all of our pets.” “True.” “You’ve always been weird.” “Um … true?” Well, it took some time for that seed to germinate (pun intended). Flash forward 4 years and I’m scrolling through pictures of flowers and feeling nostalgic. I’m reminiscing about how my Grandma Helen and I used to go for evening walks when we lived in San Diego, CA, and she would point out all the flowers and trees and tell me their names. I suddenly think, ‘Wouldn’t it be funny if we all woke up one day and found that flowers could talk, and these beautiful, delicate plants were actually snarky little jerks?’ In that moment, Kiss My Asphodel was born.
