The Metro Mambo Store is your source for accessories that celebrate the cross-cultural history of mambo and Latin-jazz, and the energy of inclusion that radiated from the dance floor of NYC's Palladium Ballroom (1947-1966), and reverberates in today's salsa dance scene! This is the start, with much more to come!
The products are inspired by The Metro Mambo Latin-jazz lecture concert series, which explores the history of Latin-jazz and mambo as a conduit of social interaction between urban communities. Conceived, created in 2009 by record collector and broadcaster/DJ Jim Byers, the series was presented by the Smithsonian Institution through 2014 (with Byers as producer and host). It has since continued uninterrupted, now independently-produced by Byers with grant support from the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities. The 2016 Series was a Critic's Pick for Washington City Paper's "Best of DC", and included presentations at the Library of Congress. Your purchases will help the "Metro Mambo" series continue to thrive. Byers is the 20 year volunteer host/producer of WPFW 89.3 FM's 'Latin Flavor Classic Edition, airing Sundays from 6-8pm ET (live streaming on www.wpfwfm.org).
