Portuguese wall tiles of Capela das Almas de Santa Catarina - St Catherine's Chapel - in the city of Porto, Portugal. Blue and white patterned tiles have become synonymous with Portugal. They are everywhere you go. This chapel is famous for its exterior use of azulejos of religious nature. I took this photo of angels in tiles. Capela das Almas (Church of the Soules) exterior wall is covered with blue and white tiles. the tile on its exterior was only added in 1929. This gorgeous blue and white tile wall depicts scenes of the life of Saint Francis of Assisi and Saint Catherine, the patrons of the chapel. Tiles (or azulejos) are the most typical and widely used form of decoration in Portugal going back to the middle ages. This chapel was remodeled in 1801 and the tile on the exterior was only added in 1929.  Tiles are made of pure clay, simple squares with sharp edges and irregular surfaces.The blue and white tiles have become the most dominant trend.
