This striking graphic pays homage to one of the most celebrated icons of American railroading: the Southern Pacific GS-4 "Daylight." The Southern Pacific GS-4 (General Service/Golden State) was a streamlined 4-8-4 "Northern" type steam locomotive built by the Lima Locomotive Works in 1941. Known as the "Most Beautiful Train in the World," the GS-4 was famous for its vibrant "Daylight" livery of orange, red, and black. This artwork highlights its most distinctive physical features: • Dual Headlights: The top light was stationary, while the bottom was a Mars light that oscillated in a figure-eight pattern to warn motorists. • The Skyline Casing: A streamlined shroud atop the boiler designed to funnel smoke away from the cab and provide a sleek, aerodynamic silhouette. • The Pilot: A large, integrated "cowcatcher" that smoothed the front profile of the engine. The image is structured into three tiers. At the top, a detailed profile shows the full engine and tender, emphasizing its massive length.
